Dr. Mark Mattson is Professor in the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine after having served for 20 years as Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging Intramural Research Program.
His research has focused broadly on neuronal degeneration and signaling cascades leading to neuronal dysfunction and death in neurodegenerative disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, brain aging, or following stroke. In parallel, his research has revealed mechanisms that promote neuroprotection, resilience, and plasticity. His pioneering work, spanning the basic to translational to clinical continuum, has revealed beneficial effects of novel dietary restriction strategies that promote brain plasticity, resistance to injury, and healthy brain aging. His talk will focus on mechanisms and potential preventive and therapeutic benefits of intermittent fasting to enhance resilience.
