Dr. Sergei Nekhai serves in key academic and research positions at Howard University, holding titles as Professor of Medicine, Microbiology, and Pharmacology, Vice Chair of Medicine, Deputy Director of the Center for Sickle Cell Disease, and Director of the Basic Science Core for the DC-Center for AIDS Research (DC-CFAR).
His major research focus is at the intersection of HIV and sickle cell disease, employing cutting-edge methods ranging from molecular and cellular techniques to animal, human, and population-based studies. Beyond his research, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring a remarkable number of students at every level, postdoctoral trainees, clinicians, and junior faculty.
